Reserves Instructions


Circulation Services offers faculty a course reserves service for electronic, print, and media materials.
Library staff will:

  • Locate and retrieve items from the shelf
  • Purchase items needed for reserves that are not in the library collection
  • Photocopy and scan materials
  • Link to articles, e-books, and streaming films from our collections
  • Obtain articles needed for reserves that are not in the library collection
  • Ensure compliance with copyright and fair use

How do electronic reserves work?

Electronic reserves (e-reserves) provides students 24/7 access to course readings and materials via D2L. The course instructor will need to grant the designated library staff member access to their D2L course page in the role of Librarian (similar to the Graduate Assistant role). The library staff member will add a Course Readings module to your D2L course page. If desired, the course instructor is able to move content from Course Readings into other modules within the course. Course instructors needing assistance with posting content in D2L should contact the instructional support specialist assigned to their college.

Your course must be active in D2L to use electronic reserves. Contact the Faculty Development and Innovation Center for instructions on activating your course.

After submitting your electronic reserves request, the library will respond with the name of the library staff member you need to add to your course.

How do physical reserves work?

High-demand course readings may be placed on print reserves at the Circulation Desk (3000 level). High-demand media items may be placed on media reserves at the Library Technology Services Desk (4000 level). Print and media reserve items may circulate for 3 hours, 1 day, 3 days, or 1 week.

How long will it take to process?

Most materials will be available within 24 hours of submission. During peak periods, requests may take longer than 72 hours to process. Items requiring library purchase or interlibrary loan will take longer to handle. Please provide your requests as early as possible to enable timely processing.

What may be placed on reserve?

Eligible materials include, but are not limited to:

E-Reserves

  • Journal or newspaper articles
  • Book chapters
  • Short poems (fewer than 250 words), short stories, or essays
  • Government publications
  • Graphs, charts, or similar imagery
  • Links to streaming video and e-books in the library collection

Print Reserves

  • Books (library- or instructor-owned)
  • Photocopies of articles or chapters
  • Maps and posters

Media Reserves (library- or instructor-owned content)

  • DVDs
  • CDs
  • LPs
  • Videos

Reserves will operate in compliance with copyright law, fair use, and standard library copyright practices. Use and reuse of reserves materials must follow copyright compliance guidelines. In general, content owned by the library may be reused; use of all other content must comply with fair use.
