‘The Hungarian Revolution at 65: An Exhibit’ now on display

Posted on October 5th, 2021

Sixty-five years ago, thousands of determined Hungarians — mostly young people — swarmed into the streets of Budapest to demand change. A brutal, corrupt communist government dominated their country since the end of World War II, and they had enough.

Eventually, hundreds of thousands participated. October 1956 heralded both great hopes and great dangers. In the end, Soviet troops poured into Hungary and drove all resistance into the ground.

“The Hungarian Revolution at 65: An Exhibit” at Booth Library showcases real artifacts from the revolt and honors the brave civilians who risked everything. Some of the protesters retreated into exile, some even coming to central Illinois. Among them was Dr. Bela Szigethy, who later settled and practiced medicine in Oblong, Illinois, and for whom this exhibit is dedicated.

The exhibit runs through November on the 3000 level of Booth Library. The public is invited to the exhibit opening at 5 p.m. on Oct. 11 in the Marvin Foyer of Booth Library.

Booth, Public Health, Health Comm to offer health literacy program

Posted on September 24th, 2021

Booth Library was awarded $18,000 from the National Library of Medicine to implement a health literacy program in the Southeastern region of Illinois.

With the award funding, Booth Library will partner with the EIU Department of Public Health and Health Communication program to create training that includes the National Library of Medicine Digital Health Literacy Program. Trainers will work with local public libraries and community organizations to customize the training to meet local needs.

“The ability to find, understand, and evaluate health information is a critical need in our community,” said Stacey Knight-Davis, Booth Library health and nursing librarian. “With the resources provided by Region 6 NNLM we will build a network of people in our area with the skills and knowledge to find and appraise health information online.”

This program is being funded by Region 6 of the Network of the National Library of Medicine, whose mission is to provide U.S. researchers, health professionals, public health workforce, educators, and the public with equal access to biomedical and health information resources and data.

Developed resources reported in this press release are supported by the National Library of Medicine (NLM), National Institutes of Health (NIH) under cooperative agreement number UG4LM013729. Learn piano or guitar: For beginners to the professional musician

Posted on September 22nd, 2021

You know the library has books and DVDs and CDs and streaming movies and electronic media of all kinds. You know we have information professionals (aka librarians) available to support your educational and research needs. You know Booth Library has beautiful spaces and comfortable places to work and relax, you may even know about the technology newly available to support your digital projects in the Center for Student Innovation.

But did you know you can use Booth Library spaces and equipment to become a musician or expand your repertoire?

It’s true! Booth library has electric guitars (Dean Vendetta hardtail) available for use in the rehearsal rooms on the 4000 level of the library. Rehearsal rooms are equipped with amplifier emulation software offering the sound of 64 amplifiers, 77 speaker cabinets and 113 effects. The available software includes Amp KitPod Farm or Guitar Rig. Not only that, but there are two electric guitars available for use outside of the library at the Library Technology Services desk on the 400 level. A headphone amplifier and tuner are checked out with the guitars.

The two rehearsal rooms on the 4000 level are equipped with Yamaha Clavinova CLP 950M digital pianos with weighted keys. The pianos are attached to a computer to allow for multitrack digital recording.

And of course in addition to the equipment and rehearsal space, Librarians at Booth — notably Head of Library Technology Services Stacey Knight Davis and Liaison for Music and Head of Cataloging Bill Schultz — have created excellent research guides to help you find the best learning materials for any level and style you wish to learn. The Piano guide features beginner and adult piano instruction manuals as well as several jazz, rock, Latin and swing piano songbooks. Our catalog will help you find hundreds more.

The acoustic, electric and bass guitar guide boasts over 200 books on instruction from beginner to advanced, chords and theory along with dozens of music books on jazz, Latin, classical, rock, bluegrass, country, blues, songbooks and collections of hits from popular artists from the last century. Many come with accompanying CDs or DVDs.

Whether you already play and just want to brush up your chops with some books for home, or you have an interest in self-directed musical study and need the equipment to get started, the faculty and staff at Booth want to help you succeed.

Booth Library awarded grant for digital literacy program

Posted on August 3rd, 2021

Governor JB Pritzker and the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity have announced that Booth Library on the campus of Eastern Illinois University was awarded a $50,000 grant to implement a digital literacy program in the Southeastern region of Illinois.

The grant is part of the Office of Broadband Regional Engagement for Adoption + Digital Equity (READY) program, through which $200,000 was awarded to four regional entities to accelerate progress toward eliminating the digital divide. In addition to EIU, READY grantees include awards of $50,000 for the following entities:

  • Region 1 Planning Council on behalf of the Northern Stateline Region
  • Southern Illinois University on behalf of the Southern Region
  • University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign on behalf of the East Central Region

READY grantees may use funds to expand immediate broadband connectivity, conduct outreach and engagement to identify current digital inequities, and establish next steps toward creating a digital inclusion ecosystem through regional collaboration among institutions of higher education, planning councils, community and economic development organizations, schools, libraries, health care, and local leaders and other related stakeholders.

Digital literacy training on basic computing skills
is led by Nate Carlson in the Booth Library Center
for Student Innovation on July 8, 2021.

At EIU, the READY grant funding supports a digital literacy program being designed by staff members at Booth Library. Nate Carlson, digital literacy coordinator, is creating a digital literacy curriculum that includes topics such as digital citizenship, basic computing skills and social media. This information is being presented in a series of train-the-trainer workshops this summer in the library’s new Center for Student Innovation.

“We are so grateful to the Illinois DCEO for funding our proposal to implement a digital literacy program in Southeast Illinois. Many residents in our region lack not only reliable Internet access but also the skills necessary to be responsible digital citizens,” said Zach Newell, Dean of Library Services at EIU.

Several regional partners are participating in the digital literacy program, including Lake Land College Adult and Alternative Education, Charleston Carnegie Public Library, Mattoon Public Library, Effingham Public Library, Elizabeth Titus Memorial Library in Sullivan and the Academy of Lifelong Learning. After attending training at Booth Library, representatives of these groups will present workshops on digital literacy topics in their respective communities this fall.

Mattoon student leaders from the elementary school, middle school and high school participated in digital literacy training during the week of Aug. 30.

In addition, the EIU College of Education intends to participate in digital literacy training.

“We are thankful to our public library, school district and community college partners who are helping us to present basic computer and information literacy workshops throughout the region,” Newell said.

The program is one of an increasingly robust Digital Equity Package offered by the Illinois Office of Broadband to increase access, adoption and utilization of high-speed internet access – all through the lens of digital equity and inclusion.

“High-speed internet is an essential resource for Illinois communities to succeed in the 21st century economy, and this administration is laser-focused on expanding access across the state,” said Gov. Pritzker. “With more than 1 million households currently without reliable internet – the state is dedicating $420 million to enhance our broadband infrastructure. The READY grant program will help put the power of planning directly into the hands of our communities and complements our historic efforts to bring enhanced speed and access to every community in Illinois.”

Many facets of The Keep

Posted on May 4th, 2021

This week is National Library Week across the USA! It is a time to celebrate our nations libraries, library workers’ contributions and promote library use and support.

The theme for National Library Week 2021 is “Welcome to Your Library.”

During the pandemic, library workers continue to exceed their communities’ demands and adapt resources and services to meet their users’ needs during these challenging times. Whether people visit in person or virtually, libraries offer endless opportunities to transform lives through education and lifelong learning. All this week we will be posting news items about some of the many information resources Booth Library offers our community beyond 4 walls. Today’s entry lists the variety of services provided to our community by Scholarly Communications Librarian Todd Bruns and the Institutional repository at EIU, The Keep.

Many people know The Keep as the repository of open access archive of the scholarship, creative output and administrative records of Eastern Illinois University. Since its adoption, more than 2.5 million documents have been downloaded around the world from The Keep.

What most people don’t know is that The Keep is also a publishing platform. EIU currently hosts the publication of six peer-reviewed journals.

The Keep serves as conference and event site platform which allows a fully functioning submission, review and publishing space for physical and virtual conferences.

The Keep is also a valuable platform to feature EIU’s wonderful faculty. The Selected Works pages within The Keep create a powerful and versatile website for faculty to maintain a record of their scholarly output. Selected Works Galleries can be organized by department or expertise and embedded within external sites.

Perhaps best of all, participating in The Keep means that our university’s scholarly and creative output is optimized for discovery by scholars, students and prospective students around the world in Google, Digital Commons Network, and all major search engines.
